HOW TO BE A TUTOR
AIMS OF SSB
To help people to be
responsible for their own learning.
TUTOR AS COUNSELOR
To empower people to solve
their own problems
v Sympathetic/Caring,
v Active Listening,
v Asking Questions,
v
Referral.
PREPARATION
Make sure that in your subject you know
-
which School Text Books there are in the Centre;
-
which School Self Study Books there are in the
Centre;
-
which School Reference Books there are in the Centre;
-
what syllabi the learners could follow;
-
at which level there are tests or examination papers;
-
at which level there are exercises, or worksheets;
and
-
for which of the above there are answers, or
answer-guides.
ARRIVAL
-
Each Tutor must first report to the organiser at the
desk, before entering the room. Write down your name and the time you
arrived.
-
If you have committed yourself to be present at a
certain date and time, make sure that you arrive in time (15 minutes
before). If you cannot keep your promise, inform the organiser in time, so
that s/he could find a replacement.
DURING THE STUDY
A. LEARNERS
-
Look around from time to time and see if learners are
using good study methods. If not, you can go and talk to them and let them
read the pamphlet: 'A Way To Study', or the Posters on 'PTLQRRR'. It is our
task to help learners use their time fruitfully.
-
Make the learners aware of the syllabi, LDTC
Worksheets Papers, and Test and (for Maths/Science) the topic directions
sheet.
-
Some learners are shy, and may not ask for help. Try
to support them in a friendly way, and ask them whether they would like some
assistance.
B. HOW TO TUTOR
The aim of tutoring is
to support learners with their independent studies. Here are some guidelines:
Help the learner to make a study plan in your
subject:
-
An
OVERALL plan: look at the syllabus together, plan which topics have to be
done, decide on the time needed for the topics, plan revision and tests.
-
A DAILY
plan: Follow the 'How To Study' guidelines:
-
Prepare:
Get all needed materials & pens & paper
-
Think:
Set your mind to what to study today
-
Look
Quickly: Survey quickly the material
for today
-
Questions:
Ask yourself questions on what you expect to learn today
-
Read:
Read Actively, writing down the main points
-
Recall:
Close your book, and write down what you learned, Check '.
-
Revise:
The next day, next week and next month.
AND:
-
Be
prepared to help a learner, when s/he has a specific problem.
-
Help the learner to find the solution him/herself, by asking questions
about the problem, directing the learner to other relevant materials, etc..
-
Do not
spend too much time with one learner.
-
Do not do
the work for the learner.
C.
WHAT TO DO WHEN LEARNERS DO NOT NEED YOU AT THE MOMENT
-
Study all
the materials available in your subject;
-
Make
direction sheets; and
-
Construct
Answer sheets to tests and/or examinations.
D. COMPUTERS
-
There
should not be more than two learners per computer.
-
If there
are more people than there are computers, a learner should offer to leave
the computer after one hour's work.
-
When
people leave a computer they should be shown how to do this:
i. Save their own files on a stiddy,
ii. Leave the programme they have been using properly,
iii. Do NOT switch off the computer. This will be done at the
end of the day.
E. THE USE OF THE PHOTOCOPIER
-
The
Photocopier can only be operated by the organiser.
-
Learners may wish to photocopy something. The charge
is M0.20 per copy (M0.40 for double sided). They will receive a receipt for
the money paid for photocopying.
-
Relevant papers such as syllabi, test papers,
examination papers, exercises from books, can be photocopied The answer
sheets cannot be photocopied, but must be consulted in the Centre.
F.
DEPARTURE
-
Inform
the learners, when you will come again.
-
Return
all materials you used to the correct places.
-
Report to
the organiser and write down the time of departure.
