Architects Drawings

The original plan had been to build a two-storey building on the top part of the site and 7 rondavels on the lower part. The two-storey building would contain study areas and a hall. Mr Sekhoane Pokane committed himself to produce the drawings of the required buildings voluntary. Unfortunately he became sick and passed away at the beginning of 2003, before he could produce the drawings.

At that time we realised, that the cost of a major building would be to high for the money available and it was decided to design a modular building, which could be built in stages. In May 2003 the SSB Trust employed Dr Peter Hancock to design the buildings, which he agreed to do at subsidized cost.

After regular consultations with Dr Hancock, the drawings were completed and then submitted to the Maseru City Council for Planning and Building Permission on 24 October 2003.

With assistance of higher authorities the Maseru City Council finally signed the building permit on 1 March 2004.

Description of the Main Building

The main building consists of interconnecting octagons, with thatched roofs.

The building is facing North, so as to profit from passive solar heating. The walls and floors are thermally insulated from the ground and encased in a shell of polystyrene covered by a sandstone wall. The large North-facing windows are double-glazed and solid Trombe walls have been built behind them to serve as thermal collectors. The roof is also well insulated. Thus, during the cold winters of Lesotho the building will be comfortable and fuel or electricity energy will not be wasted, preventing unnecessary harm to the environment.

The main entrance is on the South side of the building with an entrance hall as thermal buffer.

The Building itself consists of

  • a large octagon (9 metres diameter) as reception and study area with a storeroom for the organisers;
  • a smaller octagon (6 metres diameter) as additional study area and a storeroom for bags and coats
  • another smaller octagon as computer room with a computer storeroom
  • a third smaller octagon with kitchenette as meeting/TV room. This space can only be reached by going outside over the terrace.
